Do The Right Thing Program
The St. Joseph County Police Department is proud to announce the beginning of a new program known as the Do The Right Thing Program. This program originated in 1990, during a Miami Police Department awards ceremony. The Miami Police Chief awarded a teenager for turning in a loaded gun found at a local school. The teenager was awarded because he turned the gun into school officials, against peer pressure not to do so. Thus, beginning the Do The Right Thing Program.
The St. Joseph County Police Department is the 39th member to begin this program in the United States. Our department is also the first in Indiana to begin the Do The Right Thing Program. Our program will award children throughout the school year for doing good things in our community. Every three months, our department will narrow the nominees down to ten. These ten children will be acknowledged at an awards luncheon. At the awards luncheon, the children will receive several awards which are donated by local businesses. Each of the final ten children will be acknowledged in the South Bend Tribune as well.
Any child pre-school through high school can be nominated for this award. Our department is looking for children who have shown to be respectful, caring, and shown the courage to do good things in out community. Anyone throughout out community can nominate a child for the Do The Right Thing Award. If you would like to nominate a child or if you have questions regarding this program, please contact Sgt. William Redman or Cpl. Sult at 235-5070.
