Under Water Rescue and Recovery

The St Joseph County Police Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit is responsible for all waterways within St Joseph County. This includes quarry ponds, lakes, rivers, and retention ponds.

The official dive team was established in 1986, made up of nine Public Safety Divers. All divers have been through extensive Dive Rescue Training in Hobart, Indiana, at Dive Rescue International, which is nationally recognized for the training of Rescue Divers.

Divers are certified in other areas as well - such as, ice diving, underwater photography, evidence, body and vehicle recovery.

Many times divers are asked to dive in hazardous conditions to recover drowning victims, vehicles, safes, firearms and other forms of evidence that have possibly been used in crimes.

The St Joseph County Dive Team works closely with city and township fire departments, the Metro Homicide Unit and other public safety divers/dive teams.
