Courthouse Security
Courthouse Security division consist of 16 men and women (12
are merit officers 4 are special deputies) covering five buildings. Two are at
the Mishawaka Services building, two at The Juvenile Justice Center and 12
covering the County City Building, 1855 Courthouse and the Main Courthouse.
The job of courthouse security is to make sure the buildings and the persons
inside them are free from harm during the course of the day. This is
accomplished by having security officers at each of the public entry points to
the buildings screening for weapons and contraband coming into the buildings and
not allowing persons to bring anything into the building that would fall into
this category. We also secure the buildings by making periodic and random
checks of the buildings looking for items and persons that do not belong. We
also have the responsibility of making sure litigants are safe in court
preceding after their hearings. This is accomplished by sitting in the
courtrooms and by walking persons to their vehicles.
We keep the courthouse open for trials that go late and walk jurors to their
cars after trials.
We average 44 persons taken into custody a month.
We average 2424 Passes through the County City building Metal detectors a
day.
We average 315 Passes through the Mishawaka Services Building metal
detectors a day.
